Truth is relative?!?

In light of the presidential election, the topic of a Biblical worldview has been weighing heavily on my mind. I see young Christians (lots and lots of them) who start off strong only to finish looking nothing like they used to. Their world views are muddied and unclear. Truth has become relative for them. Everything has become relative for them.

With that being said, Lecrae is probably one of my favorite artists (and would be preachers ;) of all time. He packs a powerful message into every one of his songs.

Lecrae said it best...."Man, It's just some folks say, "All truth is relative, it just depends on what you believe." You know, "hey man, ain't no way to know for sure who God is or what's really true." But that means you believe your own statement; that there's no way to know what's really true. You're saying that that statement is true. You're killing yourself. If what's true for you is true for you and what's true for me is true for me, what if my truth says your's is a lie? Is it still true? Come on man! "

I have seen this way of thinking hit all too close to home...and it terrifies me. How can kids, who have the same parents, the same Christian upbringing, pretty much the same everything...be so different with their world views?!?

What has changed?

I think a major difference is our educational system. Our children are being indoctrinated at alarming rates. Sure...reading, writing, and arithmetic may not have changed much throughout the years, but those things have taken a back seat. Social issues, evolution, relativity, and more have taken the front seat. At least our biblical glasses could be put on or used from time to time in the educational system of the past, but now, those spectacles have all but been destroyed and smashed to bits.

I have had people tell me, it's because all the Christians have taken their kids out of the schools. Really?!? I can tell you, as a former public school teacher, that is NOT the reason. Parents (and even teachers for that matter) have very little control (if any at all) over what curriculum is brought into the classroom. There were things, such as evolution, that I would NOT teach. I would tell the kids of that theory, (and I made sure they knew what the word theory meant) but I would also tell them of the creationists views. But what about that teacher who did NOT hold to my same Biblical values? Do I really think he/she to talk about the other side and present it in a valid way?

Certainly not! and I would be a fool to think otherwise.

So, why would I send my children out into this battlefield?...unprepared? Even the disciples had years of careful training under the watchful eye of their master before 'going it alone'. I like how Voddie Baucham said it (and I'm not quoting word for word), but he said something like this...we are sending our kids out into the battle fields with no armor, no weapons, and no way to defend themselves and *hope* they'll be ok.

I've got news for some people, school is not the only place we can share the gospel with others.  Having been a teacher (and student one time long ago), I can tell you, the most time kids nowadays have to talk or get into any type of meaningful discussion is on the bus or in the lunch room...well, maybe. I know of some places where talking even during those times is not allowed.

No, we can 'evangelize' best through everyday life and living. For those who may have their kids in the public schools, then school is just one of those aspects of living, but not the only one. The grocery store, your neighborhood, the gym, your mission outreach activities, your home, your church, your community, and so much more are all aspects of everyday life and living! Jesus taught and 'evangelized' by the example He set for others wherever He went. People flocked to HIM. He didn't turn His evangelical switch on and off, He didn't have to beat them over the head with God's word or pound it down their throats, He simply lived God's words consistently out in front of them.

They saw something different in Him, something they wanted and they followed after Him for it.

When we allow Christ to live through us, we can do the same.

For those who have their kids in the public school system for whatever reason, please do not think all hope is lost....please remain diligent!!! I know God calls different people to different things. Talk with your kids everyday, go thru their books, and read over what they are reading everyday being careful to discuss every little thing that may go against God's Word. By all means....stay involved!

God said His Word will not return void and to train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. Sundays and Wednesdays are NOT going to cut it. I know kids who will go to baseball or basketball practices 3,4,5 or more times a week, yet somehow think a few hours here and there is sufficient Biblical training. That is not 'training up a child'. Training is an everyday thing. Would you have surgery from a doc that only trained for a few hours twice a week, would you attempt to run a full marathon after only training twice a week for a few hours?

Parents, wether or not your child is in the public school or homeschool it is our job to train them up.

Even though I homeschool, I fall short many, many times and must daily seek God and His will for our lives. I want my kids to be raised knowing what absolute truth is based on God's Word, not my word or the words of others. I know they'll eventually get out on their own and decide for themselves, but I hope, with God's help, coming along side them through this 'training process' will make a lasting impression on them and they will not forget and, in turn, pass on to others.

Homeschooling our children does not give us a free pass to seclude ourselves from society and live out our homeschooling lives in some little 'Jesus bubble' with doors barred, gates shut, and blinds closed . I know, I've been there. It is all too easy to 'get comfortable'. God has called ALL His children to be a light to the world. We can't be a light unless we reach into the darkness. Get out there with your kids, working along side them, teaching and training them...pray - God will guide you in what you should or should not be involved in and in the timing of those things.

Gathering Supplies and Hobby Lobby...

I got this idea from a friend of mine, who just happens to be a fellow MFW user, when I ran into her at Hobby Lobby.

I found it extremely helpful so I thought I'd pass it along. Any person can do this regardless of the curriculum you use. It does require a little planning and some storage, but it is SO WORTH IT, and in the end, will save you a TON of money :)

1 - Go through your curriculum and see what crafts and projects you have coming up for the entire year.

2 - make a list of each supply/item needed for those projects

3 - Subscribe to the weekly hobby Lobby e-mails notifying you of their weekly sale items. You can also go to their website each week, but I find it easier when they deliver the notifications straight to my inbox.

4 - With each weekly Hobby Lobby sale, scour your list and see what items you need, then go and buy them when they are on sale at Hobby Lobby.

*Tip* - Hobby Lobby often features 40% off coupons. I load each member of my family up with one each time we go in order to save on those odd-ball items or the ones that never seem to go on sale.

*Tip* - Start early in the summer (or as soon as your current school year comes to a close) so you have more weeks/months to gather your supplies for the upcoming school year.

*Tip* - Save your receipts. What you don't end up using, you can return either for cash back or a store credit.

I can't tell you how nice it is to have each item I'll need for upcoming projects and crafts already tucked away in my cabinets. No more rushing around at the last minute gathering supplies :) And I was notorious for this!

If you do not have a Hobby Lobby near you, I'm sure this will work with other craft supply stores. Subscribe to their weekly e-mails, check their websites each week, or look through their sales section in the weekly newspaper.

New and Improved School Room :)

This was our school room.

But before that, this room was our living room.

The green tea walls went well with our couch, the pictures, and the curtains we used to have up. Not our favorite color for a school room, but with a few wall decorations...we made it work.

Although we had bookshelves along the back wall, they were not deep, there were no doors, and they always seemed cluttered.

So, Big J (my hubby) built us 2 large cubbies. This helped out tremendously, but over the years, they seemed small and cluttered as well.

I love this window!!!

However, the kiddos were outgrowing their table.

So, we decided it was time to make some changes :)

First came the painting.

Then, J and his father made me new, taller, deeper cabinets.

We also swapped out the small table for a larger, adjustable one all of the kids could fit at. We also added baskets to the cubbies Jason had built earlier. (Helps hide the messier sections)

Big J rigged up our prayer map so it raises like a curtain when you pull on the cords revealing our dry erase board underneath. Hey, when wall space is limited...you gotta be creative ;)

We still have a little bit of painting left to do and Big J's dad is working on making doors to hide all the CD's, tapes, and other small books on the shelves at the back of the room. We would also like to add another basket or two to the cubbies, put up a larger world map on the left wall where the small one currently is, as well as replace our globe that recently fell apart, but past that...our room is pretty much complete...and...

we are loving it!!!

Hamburger Finale

It is finally here...the end results to our hamburger experiment. Technically, the hamburger has been long gone for quite some time, but I am just now getting around to posting all the happenings.

Day 14 of the hamburger didn't really look all that different from Day 10. The only thing we noticed was both buns had cracked all the way though and were very brittle. Still no mold...

Now, what the kiddos had been waiting for...the hamburger finale. They destroyed the "fake hamburger" (as A calls it) with hammers and PVC pipe. They were suprised at how much force it took to crack the rock-hard patty.

Just pretend you saw a video here. Apparently, the video file was corrupted. Gonna see if my husband can take a look at it and fix it.

We had a fun time with this experiment, but we are glad it is over. It was rather boring. We have not been able to eat a McDonald's hamburger (or any other pre-frozen hamburger from any other fast food place for that matter) since completing this experiment. We did enjoy a Fudrucker's hambuger a few days ago though and it was delicious... It may not not be that good for you, but at least they use fresh beef.

Week 12 Video Review

My little bro, S, will be doing home school with us again until our mom's treatments are through and she feels better.  We spent the past week mainly trying to get into a good school routine and I think we have a plan of action figured out...now if we can only stick to it. With all the kiddos doing 3 different things in school, it can get a bit hectic at times :-/

S joined J and A this week in a few of their history adventures. As you can tell from the video, we have been learning about the 50 states. We focused on the first four states: Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Georgia. We also learned about the Liberty Bell. And yes, I realize the colors used in the paintings and in the paper craft were not true to the original. We were already dangerously low on paint and what little we did have left dried up. So we salvaged what we could and worked with what we had.

On Friday, we also had 4-H. The kids love it when the rabbits come to visit. They are such cute little puff balls. The kiddos keep asking for one, but that's just not gonna happen. Most of our fish have all died and we are down from 4 to just 1 hermit crab. On a good note, the cats and dogs are still alive, but, yeah, pet rabbits are just not in the picture.

Our 2010-2011 Curriculum

I have a 1st grade daughter, a 2nd grade son, and a 3rd grade brother who often joins us in our home school adventures each week.

This year, we have chosen to continue using Abeka for Language and Math. We have added in Apologia and My Father's World. We use Apologia for science. I let the kids choose from the list of things they had to offer for their ages and they chose Astronomy. So this year, our focus will be on that. I think it is important to allow your kids some say into what they would like to learn. If they are more interested in a certain topic, I feel they would be more engaged and open to learning about that particular topic.

In My Father's World (MFW), we are using the Adventures curriculum this year. We focus more on the Biblical and Historical aspects MFW has to offer. We are loving it! It brings in the Biblical history our country was founded upon and it allows my husband, J, to be a part of our home school adventures. He usually does the Bible part of the curriculum with them in the evenings after he gets home from work. The kids love it and mom gets a little break ;)

Life...

This blog is all about life... mainly our home school life. I think the music group Revive sums 'life' up the best - "It happens in a blink, it happens in a flash, it happens in the time it took to look back, I try to hold on tight, but there's no stopping time, what is it I've done with my life?"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvuxFdM3S58&feature=related

Life really does happen in a flash. Before I know it, my kids will be grown and out of the house...no more time for teaching, no more time for training.

I started this blog mainly to keep a record (for myself, my husband, and my family) of what is going on in my kids lives and in their home school adventures. One day, when they are grown, I'd like to go back and reread it all...bringing back all the memories of what happened, what they did, what they learned, etc..., but most importantly, memories about what God has done in their lives.

God gives each parent the same command and promise, "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it" Proverbs 22:6. For me personally, this 'training' involves home school. I didn't start out homeschooling for this reason, but God, in His infinite wisdom, knew what I needed to be doing for my children and guided me in that direction long before I truly knew the reason for doing it.

On a side note, if any of you reading this blog have not read the book Kingdom Education,  I highly recommend it. It is a great book and really helped me put things into perspective.

***Now, if you do not homeschool your children, please do not get offended with what I have posted above. This is about my life and what God has shown me that I needed to be doing. I am in no way trying to tell you what you should or should not be doing with your own children, only God can do that. He has a plan for each of our lives and His plans are not always the same for each person.***

So, with that being said - here is what we are doing...
